Tautoro School’s 110 year Birthday celebration

    IMG_7335.JPG     Happy Birthday Tautoro School

110 years ago a famous tupuna and rangatira named Iraia Kuao applied to the Ministry of Education to have a school established in Tautoro. Today teachers and future generations celebrate 110 years of education.

On Friday 10th of June all teachers and students were dressed in clothes from 1906. The day started with a powhiri to welcome the past pupils back to school, it was so nice to see all the familiar faces welcoming each other. Some of these tupuna use to come to Tautoro School in 1906 especially a student from the old Native School that use to be up the hill.

After the powhiri the whole school went outside to line up in front of the flagpole, to march and parade around the court in our costumes. Miss Simeon told the children that that is what they use to do in the old days.

The timetable was interesting. The whole day we had to do with what people did in 1906. In the classroom, nails were checked some passed and some of us failed. After that we had Handwriting.  It was cursive writing, some found it pretty easy and the rest of us found it so hard.

Following that we played a variety of games such as  hopscotch, spinning tops, marbles, skipping, knucklebones, hula hoops and quoits. The most popular was the quoits because you had to try and throw the small rings over the bottles.  IMG_7334.JPG
With the fun over and done with, we had a nice as kai to end our celebration. A simple hangi of chicken, potato, pumpkin, kumara and stuffing with all our whanau and friends.
The day ended with a assembly from Room 5 showing us a video of Iraia Kuao fighting for his land and how he didn't want his children to live in darkness and fear.

  1. Hi Alice, my name is Makere. I am from Kawakawa Primary school in Room 3. I like how you did a couple of paragraphs about your school. How long have you been at Kaikohe west school.
